Recipe to improve your Heart Health

A high level of triglycerides (blood fat) is a risk factor for heart disease. Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to decrease triglyceride level. In our typical Indian vegetarian diet, we miss out on Omega-3 fats which are essential for brain function, controlling blood clotting as well as normal growth and development and are also associated with protection against heart disease and possibly stroke.
Flax seeds are the highest plant source with omega 3 fatty acids. The warm and subtly nutty flavour of flaxseeds combined with a wealth of omega-3 fatty acids makes them a popular addition to a healthy diet.
However, before you just pop in some flax seeds whole into your mouth, you should know that they just ‘pass through’ your digestive system in this form. Hence they should be in the ground form which is better absorbed.
So, how about a delicious flax seed smoothie? The use of fibre-rich flax seeds and calcium and protein-rich soya milk makes this flax seed smoothie healthy. The lemon juice enhances the flavours of the delicious fruits used in this smoothie.
To make 2 big glasses
Ingredients
  • 2 tbsp flax seeds
  • 1 cup vanilla flavoured soya milk
  • a few drops of lemon juice
  • 1 cup chilled and roughly chopped strawberries
  • 1/2 cup chilled and roughly chopped bananas
  • 6 tsp sugar
For the garnish
  • 4 strawberries and 4 bananas slices , threaded on 2 skewers
Method
  1. Combine the soya milk, lemon juice, strawberries, bananas, flax seeds and sugar and blend in a juicer till the mixture is smooth and frothy.
  2. Pour equal quantities of the smoothie into two individual glasses.
  3. Serve immediately garnished with a strawberry and banana skewer in each glass.
